This thesis studies the women’s status and the development of the Korean women’s laws on the Korean Peninsula since the Shilla period to the 21st century. The main purpose of this work is the representation of the influence of Neo-confucianism on the Korean women’s situation. It also shows their fight against gender discrimination. The first chapter describes the history and changes in women‘s situation since Shilla period to the 20th century. It shows the negative changes for women after the development of Neo-confucianism in Korea. The second paragraph presents the situation of women since 1901 to 1950. It illustrates their fight for the freedom of the country and their involvment in the fight against the japanese occupation. In addition, Korean women did not abandon their efforts to achieve the enactment of laws and the improvement of their social status. The third chapter refers to the change of women’s situation during the second half of 20th century. It shows an increase in the number of Korean rights for women and the women’s organizations on the Korean Peninsula. The last chapter describes the improvement of Korean women’s status thanks to many new laws and the abolition of the family register system called hojuje. In addition it proves, how much the Korean society has changed and how much Korean women have achieved, since, for the first time in history, the President of Korean Republic is a woman. In the summary we give the general conclusion of the issues described in our work, which is the change and improvement of women’s status on the Korean Peninsula.
