Virtual Combination Lock Prediction-a participant selects a locker number and you ask them to pull out their phone and launch their calculator app. Without you seeing, you have them enter a secret three digit pin code. Like any computer application, they always ask for you to re-enter your three digit pin code, to ensure accuracy. Instruct them to re-enter the same three digits again. The display should have 6 digits total (their secret code twice). They must now associate their PIN code with their locker number. Have them press the division key, then enter their locker number and then tap equals. The display will now show a confirmation number. You never see their confirmation number. The last thing they require is a password hint (in case they forget their pin code). Have them tap the division button again, re-enter their secret pin code and tap equals. A number will pop up, that’s their password hint number. Again, you never see their calculator display. You now have them concentrate on those numbers (could be a 1 or 2 digit number) and you proceed to reveal it digit by digit, with no questions asked. ALTERNATE HANDLING- you could have them associate their password hint number with a word on a list and reveal their word. SETUP- locker numbers on 10 cards and a numbered list of random words. SECRET-this effect is self-working. It’s based upon the classic calculator trick. Any three digit number entered twice, divided by 143 will produce a meaningless, random number. Dividing that number by the original three digit number will always equal 7. LOCKER NUMBER SELECTION-lay the 10 cards face up and use the PATEO force to leave locker number 143. REPEATING THE EFFECT- To repeat this for one person, I suggest doing the three digit PIN code first (143), then to make it appear more difficult, repeat it using a four digit pin code and utilizing 137, which will always result in 73. PATTER SUGGESTION for performing for two people simultaneously-inform your participants, you don’t want them to enter the same PIN codes, so have person two enter a four digit number (twice) and utilize 137, while person one picks a three digit number, using 143. Be sure to remind them that they had a “free choice” of their locker number, they can pick any PIN code numbers but for easier recall, they may use digits from the phone number, bank account, social security numbers, birth year, etc. Also, mention that you will look away and never see their display screen or any personal info they enter.
