Traditional Zentangle… A very simple ritual is part of every traditional Zentangle. 1. Make a dot in each corner of your paper tile with a pencil. Connect the dots to form a basic frame. 2. Draw guideline “strings” with the pencil. The shape can be a zigzag, swirl, X, circle or just about anything that divides the area into sections. It represents the “golden thread” that connects all the patterns and events that run through life. The strings will not be erased but will disappear. 3. Use a black pen to draw Tangle patterns into each section formed by the “string”. 4. Rotate the paper tile as you fill each section with a pattern.
How to Get Started
1. Use a pencil to make a dot in each corner.
2. Connect the dots with the pencil.
3. Draw a “string” with the pencil as a guide line. Try a X’, or a swirl.

4. Switch to a black pen an raw a tangle pattern in each section formed by the “string”. When you cross a line, change the pattern. It is OK to leave some sections blank.
Portholes 1. Draw two lines in the same direction. 2. Draw a circle. 3. Draw a halo line to make a moon on one side of the circle. 4. Color the moon shape with black. 5. Add more circles.
ntersection 1. Draw a line from side to side. Draw an intersecting line from side to side. 2. Draw a line from corner to corner. Draw an intersecting line from corner to corner, 3. Draw a triangle point in each section. 4. Draw a small triangle in each section. 5. Color the small triangles with black.
pinners 1. Draw horizonal lines (straight or curved) that are parallel to each other. 2. Draw vertical lines (straight or curved) that are parallel to each other. 3. Add a circle at each intersection. 4. Color two opposite sections of each circle with black. 5. Make a dot in each center area.
Each Tangle is a unique artistic design and there are hundreds of variations. Start ith basic patterns, then create your own. With Zentangle, no eraser is needed. Just as in life, we cannot erase events and mistakes. Instead, we must build upon them and make improvements from any event. Life is a building process. All events and experiences are incorporated into our learning process and into our life patterns.
Nipa* 1. Draw a circle in the section. 2. Add more circles. Vary the sizes. 3. Draw a wavy line from top to bottom. Be sure to stop the line as you reach each circle so it looks like the line went ‘under’ the circle. 4. Add more wavy lines to fill the section *srcinal Zentangle design 9 Orginal Zentangle design
River 1. Draw one very wavy line. 2. Draw a second line going the same direction to make a section 3. Color the section with black. 4. Draw additional lines on the right until the section is filled. Some lines wi be curvy and some will have points. 5. Turn isthe tile so the empty section is on the right. Draw additional lines until this section filled.
Optional…
Shading Your Zentangle Shading adds a touch of dimension. 1. Use the side of your pencil to gently color areas and details gray. 2. Rub the pencil areas with a ‘paper stump’ to blend the gray. Note: Use shading sparingly. Be sure to leave white sections white.

Along the edges of Nipa
Use a pencil to add shading and use a ‘paper stump’ to rub the pencil areas to smudge, soften and blend the gray shadows. Add shading along the right edge and the bottom of your finished shape. Make the shading aboutl/8” wide, to “raise” tangles off the page.
