A Super Solar Flare

In 1859 the largest coronal mass ejection ever recorded—the Carrington Event— hit the earth, lighting up the skies with massive auroral displays and causing problems with the telegraph communication system. Because we're completely dependent on the electrical grid and the way the grid is set up, a similar eruption today would have potentially catastrophic results.
