Carsharing 2000 – A Hammer For Sustainable Development

Originally published in 1999 by the Journal or World Transport Policy and Practice. There we were, living the last months of the automotive century, an era in which technology and man’s endless restless spirit of enterprise had combined to transform our cities, countrysides and the patterns of our day-to-day lives in ways that no one could ever have reasonably anticipated. The planet as a whole had thoroughly embraced the automobile age, with absolutely no forethought as to where all this was certain to lead. But as part of our watching brief in the field of transport and environment, we and others had noticed that there were some interesting choices being made by a growing if still small cross-section of people who wanted to enjoy a high level of quality in terms of their mobility arrangements, while at the same time not necessarily being saddled with all of the surprisingly numerous downsides of owning and keeping a car. This was a new way of owning and operating a car -- for the most part known as “carsharing”.
