An Infrared imager is a device which captures images using infrared light rather than visible light. Uncooled Thermal Imaging devices generally use a sensor at ambient or near ambient temperatures which produce quantitative parameters based on changes in resistance, voltage or current when heated by IR radiation. Cooled IR devices on the other hand use a vacuum sealed case to ensure proper operation of the semiconductor materials used in the product. Compared to normal cooled IR Imaging devices, these Uncooled Thermal detectors are relatively low cost and portable. Mid wave and Long wave IR have larger market compared to the other segments in this market according to IndustryARC. It is predominantly used for thermography, military and security, surveillance, firefighting, industrial automation and automotive segments. These industry verticals emit radiations in the mid and long wave IR and measurements also happen near to the source. Hence the higher market share for mid and long wave thermal imaging cameras. The global uncooled IR imaging market is slated to grow at 8.6% year on year for the next five years. The market is estimated to reach $3.25bn by 2018. Overall unit shipments of uncooled thermal cameras are also expected to cross the 1 million shipments market by 2017-2018. The overall IR imaging market on the other hand is around $4.9bn in 2013 and is expected to grow at 7% during the period of 2013 – 2018. The reduction in military spending across geographies has impacted the market, considering that military applications contribute the majority revenues. However, other applications in test & measurement, non-destructive testing, building diagnostics and industrial safety are contributing with higher growth rates. IndustryARC expects the automotive segment to be a significant market driver specifically in this market as automotive OEMs integrate IR detectors for night vision systems as they push for advanced driver assistance systems in majority of the passenger cars.
