This Guidebook is a ‘Call to Action’ for parliamentarians to work in order to reduce maternal death and achieve the Millennium Development Goal 5. It is also a reference document that parliamentarians can use to provide leadership in areas of maternal and newborn health. It cites many good practice examples of the role of parliamentarians in combating maternal death and illness through their representative, legislative, budgetary, oversight, advocacy and accountability functions. It also shows how gender inequality and health inequity are two obstacles, especially for the Asia-Pacific region, that parliamentarians need to be aware of.
