The Vinca ca. 5500-4500BC used a range of previously unknown symbols and numerical indicators to denote their goods and livestock. On a deeper level, these same numbers and symbols took on a more religious meaning, and were inscribed on a range of ritual items. Their sign system endured until at least the late Bronze age, and many are still in use today. This decipherment of selected Vinca and Cucuteni signs, shows their use across much of Neolithic and Bronze age Europe, giving clues to the beliefs of early cultures, from Greece to the tomb art of Newgrange in Ireland.
